Cympha Studio operations reference

This index links each chapter of the Cympha Studio operations guide, the full reference for the viewer tools used across dental case management in Cympha.

Audience: Anyone using Cympha Studio at studio.cympha.com — clinicians reviewing cases, designers cleaning meshes and staging tooth movements, lab managers verifying deliverables, anyone planning implants or tracing a ceph.

You'll come away knowing: where the full operational reference for Studio lives, what each chapter covers, and which one to jump to for the task you're trying to do.

Time required: Two minutes to find your chapter. The chapters themselves are written to be read in 5–15 minutes each.

Why this doc is short

The how-tos on cympha.com/docs cover end-to-end workflows: submitting a case, sharing a plan with a patient, approving or rejecting a design. They don't try to document every Studio button, panel, and shortcut — that would be hundreds of pages.

The detailed operational reference for Studio is hosted inside Studio itself, and it's the document that ships with every release. It splits into two volumes:

  • GuideMia Cympha — User Guide (Operations) — the reference manual. Every workspace, every panel, every menu item.
  • GuideMia Cympha — Use Cases and Training — the same surface area framed as worked examples: "I have an OrthoPlus plan and want to adjust the staging", "I have a CBCT and want to plan implants", and so on.

Both volumes are published in English. The Studio interface ships in six languages — English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Simplified Chinese — switched from the language toggle in the ☰ menu.

How to open them inside Studio

Both volumes are reachable from Studio's ☰ menu:

  • ☰ → User Guide opens the operations reference for the current workspace.
  • ☰ → Use Cases opens the worked-examples volume.

The menu items hide when the current workspace doesn't need them — but the URLs below always work.

User Guide — Operations

The reference manual. Each section below links to the relevant anchor in the published HTML.

Layout and workspaces

  • Conventions and layout — terminology used throughout the guide, what "the dock", "the case bar", "the workspace nav" actually refer to.
  • Workspaces — the seven workspaces (3D Processing, Orthodontics, Ortho Monitoring, Implant, Facial Scan, Ceph image processing, Digital Smile Design), what each is for, which menu items each exposes, and how automatic workspace switching works when you open a deep-link URL. A workspace is a menu filter, not a mode switch — it narrows the ☰ menu without changing your scene. Ortho Monitoring is the one exception that also rearranges the layout.
  • Application menu (hamburger) — every item in the ☰ menu, in the order it appears, and when each one is visible.
  • Top toolbar and model browser — the floating toolbar that appears over the viewer and the model browser panel on the left.
  • Shortcuts and messages — keyboard shortcuts and toast notification reference.

Meshes

  • Meshes — viewer, context menu, cleanup, registration — STL / PLY / OBJ handling: which formats Studio reads, how the viewer interacts (rotate / pan / zoom / pick), the right-click context menu on a mesh, mesh cleanup operations, and the Register to… flow for aligning two meshes (jaw-to-jaw, scan-to-CBCT, etc.).

CBCT viewer

  • CBCT / DICOM viewer and MPR tools — loading DICOM, the rendering panel in the left dock, how slice interaction works (scroll, window/level, pan), and the CT-only orthographic toolbar that appears when the active view is a slice.

Articulation

  • Lateral excursion (articulation simulation) — how to start the articulation simulation from a loaded .gvw case or from two jaw meshes loaded via Simulate articulation…, the occlusal plane, and the clearance / collision graph.

Case controls (the case bar at the bottom)

  • Case controls — steps, play, XML, staging and IPR toggles — the bottom bar on any OrthoPlus / AlignerBot case. Step slider, Previous / Play / Next, the movement chart icon, the IPR icon, and case XML actions (export and import — these are how AlignerBot rejections round-trip a structured artifact back to the lab).
  • Movement staging chart (desktop) — the per-tooth staging grid. When it appears, panel chrome, single-click / double-click / keyboard / drag-and-drop behaviours on cells, and the Hint actions for one-click protocol changes.
  • IPR overlay — display and editing — enabling the IPR overlay, what the visual elements mean, and how to edit the clearance values.
  • Tooth movement panel — the per-tooth movement readout (mesial-distal, buccal-lingual, etc.) at the current step.

Implant

  • Dental implant planning — the implant catalog, the add-implant workflow, updating an existing implant, the .imp implant-plan file, and the Selected implant section that shows the current implant's parameters.
  • GuideMia Implant Software interoperability (.pie) — opening a .pie project, what implant tools are available while a .pie is open, the design log, and saving back to .pie to round-trip with the desktop planner.

Ortho Monitoring

  • Ortho Monitoring — the monitoring workspace. Unlike the other workspaces it also rearranges the layout: the case bar gains camera, cloud save, and orientation-cycle controls, and a playback panel mounts beside the 3D view. Covers capturing patient photos through the live camera preview with the 3D model overlaid, the five orientations (Front, Left, Right, Upper, Lower), how Studio proposes the phase number from the treatment start date and days per step, and phase playback — including why a missing phase shows "No photo for phase n yet" instead of substituting an earlier photo.

Ceph

  • Cephalometric tracing — the ceph module. Opening a lateral X-ray, the dialog phases (initial landmark prediction → manual correction → analysis), and how to save the tracing.

Digital Smile Design

  • Digital Smile Design (DSD) — the DSD workspace. The five-step wizard (Photo, Detect, Frame, Refine, Generate), the per-tooth detection and report card, the golden-proportion tools in Frame, the two texture modes — Template (AI crown) and Preserve (own texture) — and the before/after compare slider. Processing runs on the device; only model weights are fetched. DSD is a communication and case-acceptance tool, not a lab-fabrication input.

OrthoPlus case review

  • GuideMia OrthoPlus case review — opening an OrthoPlus case, navigating between views, downloading / sharing / dropping the case into the media gallery, and the combined CBCT + case view.

Use Cases and Training

Worked examples — the same surface area framed as tasks. Pick the one that matches what you're trying to do.

How to pick a chapter

A rough decision tree:

  • You're new to Studio. Start with Use Cases — 1. Why GuideMia Cympha exists, then 2. The Cympha layout and mouse basics. Don't try to read the User Guide front-to-back.
  • You're cleaning up a mesh (closing holes, removing artifacts before submission). Go to User Guide — Meshes and Use Cases — 6. 3D mesh viewing and processing.
  • You're a designer staging an OrthoPlus / AlignerBot case. User Guide — Movement staging chart and IPR overlay, plus Use Cases — 4. Tooth setup and staging adjustment.
  • You're rejecting an AlignerBot design and need to export an XML. Use Cases — 5. XML input and output.
  • You're planning an implant. User Guide — Dental implant planning plus the round-trip docs (.pie interop if you work between desktop and cloud).
  • You're tracing a ceph. User Guide — Cephalometric tracing plus Use Cases — 8b.
  • You're running a smile simulation from a photo. User Guide — Digital Smile Design.
  • You're monitoring a patient's treatment progress with photos. User Guide — Ortho Monitoring.
  • You're reviewing an OrthoPlus plan at chairside with the patient watching. Use Cases — 3. OrthoPlus treatment plan viewer. Practise the play / step controls before you do it live.
