Bite simulation

Bite simulation in the browser

Load the upper and lower scans, set the occlusal plane and watch the arches move through a lateral excursion, with the gap on each side charted as they go. Cympha Studio is a browser viewer for DICOM and dental mesh files, and a set of software tools for everything around dental CAD. Free, no install.

How it works

  1. 1Open the upper and lower arch scans (STL or PLY), or an OrthoPlus plan, which already carries both arches.
  2. 2Set the occlusal plane. An arrow shows which way is up, towards the upper jaw.
  3. 3Set the range of the non-working condyle, 0 to 10 mm, 3 mm by default.
  4. 4Run or play the simulation. The lower arch moves through the excursion against the upper.
  5. 5Read the chart: vertical movement and the gap on the left and right side against the lateral travel.

Where it is used

Prosthetic case review

Check a scanned bite before the design goes to the lab, or a design against the opposing arch before fabrication.

Aligner plans

Run the bite at any step of an OrthoPlus plan to see how the arches meet as the teeth move.

With photos

Add two patient photos to the simulation to keep the face next to the scans.

On the case

The scans and the plan live on the Cympha case, so the lab runs the same simulation on the same files.

Questions about bite simulation

What files do I need?
The upper and lower arch scans as STL or PLY, or an OrthoPlus .gvw plan.
Does it show where the arches touch?
The chart shows the gap on each side through the excursion, so you can see where the arches separate and close.
Does it need a physical articulator's settings?
You set the occlusal plane and the condyle range. There is no facebow or articulator model to configure.
Does Cympha Studio cost anything?
No. Studio is free. Saving to a Cympha case, and a few of the editing tools, ask you to sign in with a Cympha account.
